The move, criticised by some, was deemed necessary by the museums foundation to prevent insolvency. Markus Stegmann, the museum director, announced that after deducting buyers fees, the foundation would receive approximately 42.3 million Swiss francs ($46.9 million), securing the museums future through the creation of an endowment.

Several museums and collectors have surrendered artworks by Egon Schiele to investigators who say they were looted. But others are asserting that the evidence is inconclusive.

The sales mark the newest chapter in a years-long saga involving dozens of Schieles once owned by the Jewish cabaret performer Fritz Grünbaum.

Seven drawings by the Austrian artist Egon Schiele have been removed from arts institutions across the country, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and returned to the heirs of their former owner, whose collection was stolen by the Nazis during World War II.

The works came from the Museum of Modern Art, the Santa Barbara Museum, the Morgan, and two collectors.
