Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that certain things that happened over the winter lit a fire under him entering 2023.

"Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America," wrote French-American historian Jacques Barzun in 1954, "had better learn baseball." More than any other sport, America's national pastime reflects its national character.

NPR's A Martinez talks to Evan Drellich, a senior writer for The Athletic, who covered the Houston Astro's 2017 cheating scandal. His new book is called: Winning Fixes Everything.

The story of the Astros, and of their sign stealing downfall

The commissioners office ruled that the Red Sox used an illegal-sign stealing program in 2018, and former employee J.T. Watkins was suspended. Now, he works for the Dodgers.

Cora and the Red Sox mutually agreed to part ways ahead of the 2020 season, and the 47-year-old was suspended for the entire pandemic-shortened campaign as well. He was rehired ahead of the 2021 season, and the team made it to the ALCS before falling to the Astros.

At this point everybody already knows the extent to which the 2017 Astros cheated, and Cora and the Astros were already punished for it. Still, hearing about how he allegedly bragged about it after the fact to his new team, almost as if he was proud of it, will certainly not do him any additional favors in the court of public opinion.
