Boldly directed, lyrically enacted play melds a personal story of rebellion in French Cameroon with the story of independence – but leaves both unfinished

The cast has been announced for the world premiere of Under the Kundè Tree, an empowering production set during the ‘Hidden War’ of Cameroonian Independence in the 1950s, coming to Southwark Playhouse. 

The concept of doing as a site-specific and promenade production gave the audience a chance to walk around Brixton and get a feel for this interesting, multicultural part of London.

The piece continues its London run until 12 March

Dipo Baruwa-Etti’s thoughtful exploration of the Black experience is smartly acted but never fully builds on its themes

Performances are mostly strong, Selina Jones shows standout physicality and Itan’s relationship with Kayode is the best part of this show.
