The first alcohol-free zone has been approved in the City of Houston after councilmembers made the decision on Wednesday.

City Council on Wednesday approved the city's first alcohol-free zone around a daycare. Heights Daycare's application was approved and went into effect immediately.

On Wednesday, Houston City Council is voting on what could become the first alcohol-free zone around a daycare or childcare facility in the city.

The city approved the ordinance a decade ago to allow daycares to operate without alcohol sales nearby, but no one had ever asked for the law to be applied until now.

According to officials, to date, no alcohol-free-zones have been created for daycare centers or childcare facilities.
