A man and a woman have been arrested after an eight-year-old boy was seriously injured when he was bitten on the head by a dog believed to be an XL bully.

An eight-year-old boy has suffered serious head injuries after being mauled by a dog in Bootle.

Merseyside Police have arrested a man and a woman after a boy, eight, was bitten by an XL Bully dog in Bootle and rushed to hospital with a serious head injury, as an investigation was launched

A man and woman, who are not related to the schoolboy, have been arrested and the animal has been seized. Officers have described the attack as "horrific".

The attack occurred in Bootle, Merseyside, on Saturday February 10 where the boy, 8, was mauled by the dog while playing outside near Wadham Road.

The boy was taken to hospital for treatment of serious head injuries, where he remains in a serious but stable condition
