A very difficult and deadly decision, an offduty officer shot and killed his son to save his wife who then died herself. Reporter im bruce leshan in gaithersburg. Police are back at the scene of this horrible shooting and stabbing. They found one round from Sergeant James stirkens gun in a neighbors garage. He had shot his son to death in a futile effort to keep his son from killing his mom. A good family man, loving wife, loving kids. Reporter neighbors are struggling to understand what could have happened in a second floor bedroom inside the carefully kept home on lake katrine terrace. Police say sergeant stirkens, a cop for 27 years, was inside the house off duty when he heard noises and found his 25 yearold son christopher stabbing his mother denise.
