The new project will survey community members “where they are” to map out landmarks and places important to Sacramento’s LGBTQ+ community members, using a similar framework to the African American Experience Project.

The city’s calling for submissions to the LGBTQ+ Historic Experience Project, which goes through the end of 2024.

Queer history is not just in San Francisco. A raid at a gay bar in San Diego in 1979 helped galvanize the nascent LGBTQ community there, while Sacramento also has a rich past.
