Ashes and DNA from the iconic actress - who passed away aged 89 of natural causes last month - will be flown into space according to space and astronomy news site Universe Today.

Todd Thompson of Southwest Orlando and the actress who played Lt. Nyota Uhura on the “Star Trek” TV series worked together on a feature documentary about the star and the remaking of NASA.

Nichols remained a supporter of the space programme for decades. In 1991, Nichols became the first African American woman to have her handprints immortalised at the TCL Chinese Theatre.
