Wesley Johnson, 64, was arraigned in Greenfield District Court later Thursday on charges of armed assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm without an FID card and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, according to a press release from the Gill Police Department. Assistant District Attorney Ryan Scott handled the arraignment before Judge Laurie MacLeod, who ordered Johnson be held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing, which is set for Thursday, July 29.

The man’s identity is currently unknown. According to Fire Chief Floyd “Skip” Dunnell III, firefighters from his department and the Northfield Dive/Rescue Team responded to the bridge at around 6:50 p.m. after a caller reported seeing a man’s body floating down the river, face down. “The body was seen by a bicyclist crossing the Route 10 bridge,” Dunnell said. After the Fire Department arrived, Dunnell said he saw the body about a football field’s length from the bridge, and advised his crew to be cautious as the body neared debris on the river.
