We need a democratic system in which the power of the state cannot subjugate the power of the people. We need to work out and build an African Democracy just as Europeans and their North American first cousins established Western Democracy and the Chinese conceptualised their democracy or socialism with “Chinese characteristics”.

On January 23, 2022, Burkina Faso’s military staged a coup and ousted President Kaboré. The coup leaders accused the government of failing to stop the Islamist insurgency that has killed thousands and displaced millions. The international community condemned the coup and demanded the return of constitutional order and the release of the president and other officials. The coup is the ninth in Burkina Faso’s history and threatens its democracy and stability.

African students and scholars have their fair share of the blame. We cannot continue to complain and whine about a problem we partly created or have contributed to perpetuating. For fund sake, many scholars are reluctant to demonstrate academic courage. We have to wake up and take steps to effect a paradigm shift in African studies. It is not enough to blame Western funders and collaborators for dictating everything.

The reason why the US and its allies don't accept BRICS is because they are reluctant to allow others to compete with Western economic and political institutions and seek to preserve their own monopoly and control over the global economy and political processes. In addition, the fact that it is China that plays a leading role in BRICS, and that followed by Russia.
