You head to your ‘suki’ stalls at the ‘palengke’ for your weekly marketing run, or you need to pay the trike driver – those are as real as it gets as examples of your typical, everyday financial transactions. In this time of pandemic and community quarantine, with health and safety protocols paramount on our minds, it’s only natural that handing over paper bills and coins can be health concerns. But do they really have to be concerns?
When we mark time at our favorite malls, we gain admittance by registering via a QR code; and when we eat at a fine dining restaurant, we’re offered cashless transactions via a QR code. So, what if these palengke purchases or tricycle charges could also be conducted in a cashless manner? Wouldn’t that be great? No need to bring wads of cash, be ‘bulsa-ful’ of coins and loose change. Well, GCash is making that happen right now!

Singlife entered the local market in 2020, around the same time the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global pandemic. Apart from its economic impact, people also feared the expensive medical bills that came with contracting the virus. Armed with advanced insurance technologies, Singlife Philippines quickly pivoted its launch plans and offered Cash for Dengue Costs with a FREE COVID-19 cover.
Together with GCash, the country’s biggest e-wallet provider, a large group of customers were given the opportunity to buy a protection product that provides medical coverage of up to PHP 421,500 for as low as PHP 700 per year. GCash’s sister company, Globe Telecom Inc. saw how this can also benefit their customers, so it partnered with Singlife Philippines to offer a FREE 3-month promo version with up to PHP 140,500 in total cash benefits for their subscribers.

Though far from a complete panacea to the country’s troubles during the COVID-19 crisis, digital technology and connectivity have been instrumental in minimizing the pandemic’s impact. In fact, the rapid adoption of digital technologies was recommended by the World Bank to help the Philippines overcome the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, recover from the crisis, and achieve its vision of becoming a middle-class society free of poverty.
A joint report released by the World Bank and the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) in October last year, titled “A Better Normal Under COVID-19: Digitalizing the Philippine Economy Now,” found that the use of digital technologies such as digital payments, e-commerce, telemedicine, and online education, has risen in the country, softening the pandemic’s blow to individuals, businesses, and the government.
