tried to do it and was told by the department of justice he didn t have congressional authority to do that. so i think it is going to take congressional authority. but i welcome anything this president is willing to do or any president is willing to do to save lives. i m helping to support that. the subject of mental health came up several times. here is the president. to go to court would have taken a long time. you could do exactly what you say but take the guns first, go through due process second. were you surprised to hear the president say that, that the president has been taking a great deal of heat over that from the base on the right. well the fact you do need due process. i m one of the co-authors of a bill just introduced that would have one of the gun violence restraining orders, gvros, that in extreme cases like in florida, would empower local officials to actually remove weapons before anybody hurts somebody. well that s really important. they don t have that law
i want to play another moment from that meeting yesterday, a moment that got a lot of attention. listen to this one. take the firearms first and then go to court, because that s another system. because a lot of times by the time you go to court, it takes so long to go to court to get the due process procedures that you could do exactly what you re saying, but take the guns first, go through due process second. he was talking about the mentally ill, and he thinks in some cases it s better for police to simply seize the weapons before allowing due process, legal rights, if you will. what do you think the reaction would have been, for example, if president obama had suggested the same thing? well, he d have been against it entirely and said it was wrong and you deserve due process. we were trying to pass no fly no buy, and we re still trying to do it. the republicans said it gave the people on the suspected terrorist list, it denied them
right conservative. he believes in conservative principles. so that s a negotiating tactic? i think he s saying, and i think rightfully, there are some things on the table. when he says take the guns first, my guess is i didn t see the whole thing that he was referring to the issue how do you keep someone with mental health issues reported, how do you keep them from getting a gun? that makes total sense in terms of how we write that. it is not the most articulate way to say it, take the guns away and due process second. thank you. chris? walmart has new rules on buying guns. who won t be able to get firearms, ammo and what type at their stores anymore. okay. listen to this. our panel of gun owners taking on some of the proposed policies to stop gun violence, including a ban on bump stocks. it s not an issue of the gun itself. it is an issue of the individual behind it.
out of their hands. fix the background system. ban bump stocks. that would have mitt tkpaeuigat massive amount of carnage in las vegas. those are moves we can all make. here s some of the things the president has said. let me just play those for you and our viewers. i m going to write the bump stock, essentially write it out. it doesn t make sense. i have to wait until i m 21 to get a handgun but i can get this weapon at 18. i don t know. i like take the guns first, go through due process second. is it fair to say if president obama said take the guns first and go through due process second i would say that s fair to assume. is it republicans aren t taking the president literally on this stuff? no. i think he is taken literally. we know he is unique in how he says things. i don t think he is overly ideological. he is not someone raised a far
one republican senator calling it surreal. during yesterday s brainstorming session with lawmakers on guns, president trump tended to agree with democrats and even put some ideas on the table that have riled the nra. the comments really, though, raise some eyebrows. take a listen. some of you people are petrified of the nra. you can t be petrified. in your bill, what are you doing about the 18 to 21? change that. are you going to leave that? you re afraid of the nra, right? this is not a popular thing to say in terms of the nra. i m saying it anyway. it doesn t make sense i have to wait until i m 21 to get a handgun but i can get this weapon at 18. i don t know. i like taking the guns early take the guns first, go through due process second. if you add conceal carry to this, you ll never get it passed. cnn s sunlen serfaty joins us from capitol hill. how are the president s comments going over today? reporter: it continues to really stun a lot of lawmakers
