On October 20 last year, the CCI slapped a penalty of Rs 1,337.76 crore on Google for anti-competitive practices in relation to Android mobile devices.

The Supreme Court of India will hear the cross pleas of Google and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) challenging the verdict of an appellate tribunal in a case related to Googles alleged anti-competitive practices in the Android mobile device case on 14 July.

The NCLAT started its hearing in the Android matter on February 15, following a direction of the Supreme Court. The apex court had directed the NCLAT to decide the appeal by March 31.

ADIF, the policy think tank focusing on Indian digital startups, has urged the authorities, including the Competition Commission of India (CCI), to look into the matter and ensure that Google complies with the specific directives.

The latest verdict of Supreme Court in the Google-CCI case can benefit the Indian tech and digital industry in the long run but there is a long road ahead to achieve that goal, industry experts said on Saturday.

The homegrown startup ecosystem players on Thursday hailed the Supreme Courts order where it refused to interfere with the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) decision, declining to stay operation of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) order imposing Rs 1,337.76 crore fine on Google.

On January 6, the NCLAT had refused to grant interim relief to Google in its appeal against the CCI order, and instead listed the matter for final hearing on April 3.

The NCLAT had passed the order last week stating that since that since no urgency was shown in filing the appeal, Google could not be allowed to insist on interim relief.
