Despite his efforts to bring a peaceful end to the Cold War and restructure the Soviet Union on more liberal terms, his own people disdained him, holding him responsible for the collapse of the USSR.

In Russia and around the world, Mikhail Gorbachev was remembered on Wednesday. The last leader of the Soviet Union died Tuesday at 91, and his passing brought sharply different reactions. Nick Schifrin reports.

While he will be most remembered in Europe and the US as one of history’s great peacemakers, Russians saw an entirely different face to Gorbachev, as the personification of instability and decline.
