Gorham town council approves third school budget proposal

School leaders passed a third version of the budget after voters rejected the first two

School officials say the cuts would require them to eliminate staff and extracurricular activities

The proposed $49 million budget would eliminate middle school sports, make high school sports pay-to-play and cut 20 jobs. Other effects might go beyond the classrooms and playing fields.

The school board says the $48.2 million budget is too low and should be rejected so it can work out a compromise with the Town Council.

Voters in Gorham rejected the proposed budget last month, forcing the town council to rethink their plans.
