An American airman who was behind the wheel of a car that fatally struck a British motorcyclist last year was found not guilty this week of causing his death.

Airman first class Mikayla Hayes, 25, was driving home from RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk when she allegedly failed to spot Matthew Day approaching.

Airman first class Mikayla Hayes was heading towards her home in Norfolk, away from RAF Lakenheath where she worked, when she pulled out across the path of Matthew Day, 33, who was riding past on a motorcycle. Mr Day was later found to have a "low concentration of THC" in his system.

Airman first class Mikayla Hayes, who had denied the offence, earlier wept as she gave evidence at Norwich Crown Court and said: I still to this day have no idea why I didnt see that motorcycle.

Matthew Day, 33, died after the incident involving Airman first class Mikayla Hayes in Norfolk in August 2023.

Airman first class Mikayla Hayes, 25, drove her Honda Accord into the path of father-of-one Matthew Day on August 26 last year as he travelled south along the A10 at Southery, Norfolk.

Airman first class Mikayla Hayes, 25, pulled out to turn right when motorcyclist Matthew Day was 10 to 15 metres from her car, according to the testimony of witness Graeme Pratt.
