The new Howard Frankland Bridge is a little more than halfway done, and the Florida Department of Transportation's largest in the Tampa Bay area will bring major changes to travel across the bay.

Officials have been working on the Gateway Expressway in Pinellas County since September 2017. Now, overhead signs are up and parts of the road are nearing completion, but there’s more to do. 

Crews are making progress on the Gateway Expressway Project. Construction began in 2017. They’re working to make sure this project gets done by early next year, despite the pandemic.

There’s a lot more action off the side of the Howard Frankland Bridge in 2022, with construction crews using up to 20 cranes and 66 barges for a new 8-lane bridge replacement project, FDOT said.

It is Tampa Bay’s most traveled bridge, and part of it is being replaced. If you have driven over the Howard Frankland recently, you have undoubtedly seen the giant cranes. Construction is happening now to build a brand new 8-lane span of the bridge.
