As controversy swirls regarding recent reports of up to 1,600 temporary foreign workers (TFW) being brought to Windsor to help set up the NextStar EV battery plant, Unifor Local 444 President Dave Cassidy says the issue is nothing more than political hay.

With new contracts now in place for Ford and General Motors, an auto expert warns the biggest challenge for Unifor securing a deal with Stellantis could be an internal one for the union. 

While a pattern agreement may have been ratified, some members of Unifor are not happy with the result, Gabriela Calugay-Casuga reports.

A narrow margin of support by Unifor members for the proposed Ford contract is a sign of the times according to the union who will now shift focus towards General Motors.

Several days after reaching a tentative collective agreement, 5,600 Ford workers across Canada will cast their vote this weekend for what’s been called the largest negotiated general wage increase in Unifor and CAW history.

Over 18,000 autoworkers are affected by the current round of bargaining. Those demands were presented during the official handshakes Thursday with the Detroit Big Three.
