Quebec’s Chief Electoral Officer (DGEQ) says he did not seek to withhold documents requested by MNAs in connection with the 1995 referendum campaign. He is asking to meet with elected officials to make them aware of the difficulties it is facing in responding to their requests.

A citizens demonstration is planned for Friday to increase the pressure on the chief electoral officer (DGEQ) to reveal the documents of the Grenier Commission, which investigated the financing of the No camp during the 1995 Quebec referendum.

The rally will take place at 11 a.m. Friday in front of the DGEQ offices in Quebec City.

The Parti Québécois (PQ) announced on Wednesday its intention to table a bill in the national assembly to obtain the publication of documents concerning the financing of the NO camp during the 1995 referendum campaign.

The result of the referendum was so close that supporters have often accused the No side of having bent the rules on campaign financing during the process.

After being rebuffed by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), the national assembly is back at it again, ordering the CEO on Friday to lift the veil of secrecy on the illegal financing of the No camp in the 1995 referendum. Premier François Legault avoided saying that the referendum was stolen, as supporters of the "Yes" side maintain.

The Legault government will table a new motion to force the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) to lift the secrecy surrounding the enquiry into the financing of the No camp in the 1995 referendum on sovereignty.
