BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) Some local residents who said they are concerned about a new road project in Panama City Beach spoke up Thursday night. They’ve heard the third phase of the Philip Griffitts Senior Parkway will run right through their neighborhoods. Bay County leaders say that is not the case. “The end goal […]
Phase two of the road, where construction began about a year ago, stretches west from Nautilus Street to Pier Park Drive. There, it will connect with an existing portion that spans from Pier Park Drive to State 79.
The parkway was constructed through a public-private partnership with Panama City Beach, Bay County, the Florida Department of Transportation and the St. Joe Company.
Phase two cost about $16 million. PCB received $4 million from FDOT, $3.5 million from the county and about $1 million from the state. The city funded the rest. While we do not have specific traffic counts, we estimate thousands of people are already utilizing Philip Griffitts Sr. Parkway to get from State Road 79 to Panama City Beach Parkway, Sheldon wrote. We anticipate that will only increase as this loop road will now go all the way over to Nautilus (Street), bypassing the heavily traveled portion of Panama City Beach around Pier Park, where we do experience a lot of gridlock.
PANAMA CITY BEACH For a few days this week, two roads near Pier Park will be temporarily closed.
According to Kathy Younce, assistant public works director for Panama City Beach, the road closures include all of Philip Griffitts Sr. Parkway and Pier Park Drive past the northmost entrance of the Pier Park Crossings Apartments.
The roads will be closed from 6 a.m. Tuesday until midnight Thursday as crews put the finishing touches on phase one of Philip Griffitts Sr. Parkway and connect it with phase two.
Formerly known as Bay Parkway and sometimes referred to as Back, Back Beach Road, the street currently stretches from State 79 to north of Pier Park Drive, where it will link with a second segment under construction that spans to Nautilus Street.
