Geoffrey at this screen grab. reportedly it leaked by an indonesian air traffic controller not verified by cnn. it appears to show airasia flight 8501 was rising in altitude but was losing speed and was at a velocity that was too slow to sustain flight. what does that tell us? >> indeed that came from navaid indonesia. we obtained that. and what it shows is that as we know they requested an altitude climb. it was denied. however, it shows the aircraft traveling through 36,300 feet. the arrow you...

Sky. in a more or less vertical attitude. what happens is we have radar data that shows that the aircraft was found approximately 66 miles from its last known position. now, most airliners have a glide ratio of about 15-1. simply what it means from about 33,000 feet they can glide about 93 miles. so where the aircraft was found from the last known position suggests the glide. however, the radar data suggests a very low ground speed which suggests an arrow die dammic. its going to be important th...

That adjusting the tilt of the radar to see where the most intense areas are, right or left or up or down. but this is a very typical process that we go through to avoid weather and keep it at a comfortable, safe ride for our passengers. >> right now there seems to be a working theory that the plane stalled, meaning that the plane is essentially ascending and the speed is reduced. >> it looks legitimate. we here at cnn have not verified that that im aware of. i guess the 105 knots was what was s...

Stage. but the airplane turned left. then something occurred that required the attention of the pilots to the point that they did not contact air traffic control. thats appropriate. first you fly the jet. you maintain control of it. you do the necessary and proper procedures and only then would you advise air traffic control. what occurred we dont know yet. >> some folks are saying this plane may have been flying too slowly around the neighborhood of 400 miles an hour. how could that have contri...

The storm or they may have decided to climb regardless of clearance which would be extremely unusual. in terms of the radar plot here the speed given i believe would be the ground speed and not air speed, indicated air speed to control the flight of the air control. one would expect to have a significant difference in speed between the indicated and ground speed. that radar in itself is not entirely conclusive. i believe there were winds of some 40 knots at that altitude. that has to be taken in...

Aircraft would have been in a stall position. but if you look at that screen grab down in the bottom right-hand corner it says 535, which is the indicated air speed, clld be awhich would be a normal speed, not a stall speed. >> so that isnt too slow that isnt -- i read somewhere it was 100 knots too slow to maintain flight in an ascent no? >> right. thats what was reported. but converting the knots theres there -- but ground speed and air speed are two different things in terms of winds aloft. i...

Its the most modern technology to look into a thunderstorm and determine where the severe areas you cannot go are and where the areas are where its just potentially light precipitation, where you can go safely. >> right. what we do know is the pilot asked to go higher. air traffic control said no you can divert to the left but you cant go any higher. it was three, four minutes after that that they lost contact with the plane. thats a very short period of time. what does that tell you? >> well so...

Before it stalls. so you do run into that situation. but as long as youre not experiencing a lot of airplane upset in the form of turbulence youre still in an okay situation as long as youre monitoring the power for the airplane and how the systems are operating. >> you raise an interesting point, because i was talking to a friend and colleague who is an aviation expert in australia, and he made that point. said hed been looking at the radar information that was available and said they were at 3...

What happened. i can tell you flightaware, the flight trafficking website that tracks all jets in the air at all times, has updated this flight path and it now indicates that the jet actually came down much closer to the russian border than previously stated. there are a number of reasons this could have happened and the most likely according to those who are watching this is that whenever it was struck or whatever happened, there was a glide path that happened after the strike that made it land...

But the airline industry, as has been said, is under so much financial pressure. it needs -- it needs to be mandated by icao for the whole industry to move forward. >> arthur, one of the arguments against using live streaming data is too many planes transmitting too much information. do you buy that? >> i do not. and theres a very simple solution for it. instead of streaming all the information thats contained in a flight data recorder, you limit the stream to basic information like air speed, l...
