Members of East Lothian Council’s cabinet approved the plans at a virtual meeting earlier today. The move will mean daily charges will go from £2 to £2.50, with a season ticket rising from £40 annually to £50. Councillor Jim Goodfellow told the cabinet meeting that the fee was cheaper than an ice cream for visitors to the council-operated car parks. He told members: “To put it in perspective, people pay more for their ice cream than they pay to park.” The minority Labour adm...

A HOUSE extension was so big that planners ruled it was equivalent to building a second home and refused to give it the go-ahead. The proposed extension to a cottage at Garleton, near Haddington, was rejected because East Lothian planners ruled it was bigger than the original building. However, their claim it was the same as building another house in the countryside, which goes against council policy, has been thrown out by councillors on appeal. Community activists have been campaigning for more than 15 years for a cycling and walking path to be created between the two communities. Now, they hope the support will help deliver the footway – bypassing the busy B1345 – at some point this year. Euan Davidson (Scottish Liberal Democrats), Craig Hoy (Scottish Conservatives), Paul McLe...

Outdoors, food and alcohol can be consumed by up to six people from up to six households. Many venues had also upgraded or extended their beer gardens in preparation for the big day, with outdoor seating, heaters, tents and marquees added. The Courier paid some of the county’s hospitality venues a visit on Monday and, despite it being a cloudy and windy day, it did not stop customers from supporting their local. Dean Ivinson, manager at the Ravelston House Hotel in Musselburgh, said: ...

Scots chef Tom Kitchin branded restrictions a joke Celebrity chef Tom Kitchin has taken to Twitter to slam hospitality restrictions which he says are a joke. Posting on his social media account, the chef said he could not see the sense in having to close their doors at 8pm and not able to serve alcohol while it was permitted for a longer period of time outdoors. Restaurants are only able to serve six people from two households indoors under an 8 pm curfew, with a total ban on serving alco...
