Hisar, May 17
A PhD student killed herself at Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology in Hisar, police said on Monday, leading to investigations into allegations of harassment by two senior faculty members.
Sonia, 26, was a student of the university’s Microbiology Department. Police said she took poison in the laboratory of her department. She was immediately taken to the hospital but died there, police said.
A suicide note found after her death mentions no names, but says that she was “taken advantage of” when she was particularly vulnerable. The student’s father accused a senior faculty member of harassing her and claimed he’d even reported the person to university authorities.
