Halifax Wildfire News Today

A daycare centre in Upper Tantallon, outside Halifax, that burnt down during the wildfires this year has announced plans to rebuild.

Following the May fires, residents of the area began voicing their concerns about safety after many were stuck in traffic trying to access Hammonds Plains Road.

Questions still linger in a Nova Scotia neighbourhood ravaged by a wildfire nearly two months ago.

A vintage Campbell's soup bowl in one family's home not only survived the Halifax-area wildfire, it was salvaged last year from a cottage destroyed by Hurricane Fiona.

An emergency alert was sent out in Nova Scotia on Friday to notify more residents that it was safe to return home, after wildfires forced at least 16,000 people to evacuate.

As about 4,000 people still await their return home, Halifax officials say more wildfire evacuation orders are expected to be lifted for residents on Thursday.

During a grim tour through through the most impacted area Tuesday, piles of charred rubble could be seen where houses once stood, with burned out cars parked in driveways.

A construction industry leader said in an interview on Wednesday that it may take up to three years to rebuild the homes lost in the fires, due to an existing provincial backlog.

The testing is necessary because the groundwater could be contaminated by residue from the fire, chemical fire retardants and fuel from ruptured tanks.
