Senators Move to Close ‘Security Loophole’ on Chinese State-Backed Firms
A bipartisan bill aims to bar Chinese state-linked firms from exploiting a “security loophole” to enter U.S. technology markets.
The Secure Equipment Act of 2021 (pdf), introduced by Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.), targets major Chinese telecom providers, including Huawei, ZTE, Hytera Communications Corporation, Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Company, and Dahua Technology Company. The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) has flagged all five as a threat to national security.
Under the act, the FCC, which oversees all interstate and foreign communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable, would cease reviewing or approving any product or services from the named companies.

United States (US) Federal Communications Commission has designated five Chinese companies including telecom major Huawei Technologies Company as a threat to the US national security,
Economic Times.
The other four companies designated as a threat under a 2019 law aimed at protecting US communications networks include ZTE Corporation, Hytera Communications Corporation, Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Company and Zhejiang Dahua Technology Company.
Issuing a statement, FCC s chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said, This list provides meaningful guidance that will ensure that as next-generation networks are built across the country, they do not repeat the mistakes of the past or use equipment or services that will pose a threat to U.S. national security or the security and safety of Americans.
