The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is investing $500 million to remove harmful substances like lead paint from low-income homes.

From application to completion of removal, the process generally takes two to three months.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins announced the award on Tuesday.

Standing outside a Baltimore home, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia L. Fudge joined members of Maryland’s congressional delegation and state and city lawmakers Monday to tout the federal agency’s awarding of millions in grant money to help keep more Americans safe from their own houses.

The Clarksville Neighborhood and Community Services (CNCCS) was awarded a $2.8 million grant for the City from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on Dec. 16 to protect children and families from lead-based paint and home health hazards.

The money is expected to help mitigate health hazards in 220 Long Beach homes.  

Long Beach will receive nearly $4.6 million to clean up lead paint and other health hazards in the homes of low-income families.
