Two new COVID-19 vaccine centers being established in California
WASHINGTON - The federal government is stepping in to help California speed up COVID-19 inoculations, announcing Wednesday the creation of two community vaccination centers.
Jeff Zients, who leads President Joe Biden’s task force on COVID-19, said the initiative will help “two of the communities most hard hit by this pandemic.” One will be located at Cal State in Los Angeles and the other center will be run out of the Oakland Coliseum.
He said both locations will be run in partnership with the state but staffed mostly by federal workers, including officials from Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Health and Human Services.
A Tahoe driver was stranded for 7 hours in snow. Officials say it happens all the time By Gregory Thomas
A Tahoe man who survived a blizzard while stranded in his pickup truck for 7 days in remote Sierra wilderness told officials he was initially led astray by his GPS navigation system.
On Jan. 24, the man, 29-year-old Harland Earls of Placer County, set out from a friend’s home in Grass Valley for the 60-mile drive to Truckee. Under mild conditions, it’s a straight shot from Highway 20 to Interstate 80 over Donner Pass. However, winter road closures prompted Earls’ GPS app to reroute him along an obscure back road, where he ran into trouble.

A Tahoe driver who survived seven days stranded in the Sierra told officials he was led astray by a GPS navigation system that directed him down a notoriously treacherous mountain road.
Rescuers helicoptered Harland Earls of Placer County to safety Sunday, two hours after emergency dispatchers tracked his cell phone to a remote country road in the heart of Tahoe National Forest and seven days after he started out on what should have been a straight shot to a friend’s home, Sierra County officials said.

A man who went missing during Tahoe s biggest snowstorm of the winter so far was found safe after hiking to high enough ground to make a 911 call for help.
Harlan Earl of Tahoe left for Truckee on Jan. 24 after visiting friends in Grass Valley. According to the Sierra County Sheriff s Office, Earl soon found that Interstate 80 was closed due to snow, so he used his car s GPS to find him a new route. The GPS instructed him to drive off Highway 49 and use Henness Pass Road into the Sierras, a route he was unfamiliar with.
