In 1906, white residents of Cotter (Baxter County) expelled all of the towns Black population, save for a single family of three people. Although the catalyst for this expulsion was a fight between two Black men, local newspapers had been predicting, and even advocating for, such an expulsion long before that fracas occurred.

Sundown towns were a form of discrimination and segregation prominent in the U.S. during the period after Reconstruction through the first half of the 20th century. The name comes from a warning—with either an explicit or implicit threat of violence—that people of color were not welcome in the area after sundown.

Largely lost to the historical record, Gulfport was the only municipality in Pinellas County once considered a "sundown town" that excluded Black people.

While it is easy to dilute this information as distant history, let's look at the facts, shall we? Sundown Towns still exist to this day.
