Iwao Hakamada has spent a record 46 years on death row after being convicted in 1968 for a family murder

SHIZUOKA--In likely her last opportunity to do so, Hideko Hakamada took the stand here and made an impassioned plea for a court to finally clear the name of her brother.

SHIZUOKA—A 90-year-old woman made an impassioned plea on Oct. 27 for the swift acquittal of her brother who spent decades on death row after being convicted of murder on dodgy evidence.

Hideko Hakamada broke into tears on March 13 and mustered up the strength of her 90-year-old body to celebrate in front of the Tokyo High Court.

Iwao Hakamada was held in solitary confinement for 45 years until DNA evidence emerged to undermine his conviction.

Iwao Hakamada is believed to have spent the longest time on death row than any other inmate. Doubt has arisen over the credibility of blood-stained clothes that were used to convict the former boxer.

Tokyos High Court ordered the retrial for 87-year-old former boxer Iwao Hakamada on Monday, nearly six decades after he was first convicted in 1968.

Iwao Hakamada was sentenced for the 1966 killing of four family members. His lawyers say the conviction was based on a forced confession and fabricated evidence.
