It requested responses from the Kashi Vishwanath Temple trustees and priest Shailendra Kumar Pathak Vyas by April 30, addressing a plea from the mosque management committee against an Allahabad High Court ruling allowing Hindu prayers in the cellar.

What happenedThe Supreme Court said it would not stop Hindu prayers that were recently permitted in the southern cellar of the Gyanvapi mosque.

While dismissing the plea of the mosque committee on February 26, the high court had observed that the Uttar Pradesh governments 1993 decision of stopping worship rituals inside the "Vyas Tehkhana" -- located at the southern cellar of the Gyanvapi -- was "illegal".

A Varanasi court has set February 28 for the Gyanvapi Masjid committees plea against a recent ruling allowing priests to perform prayers in the mosques cellar. The committee has also filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court against the district court verdict.

The Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee, which looks after the affairs of the mosque in Varanasi adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath temple, had filed the plea on Friday last week challenging the Varanasi court order allowing prayers in the southern cellar of the Gyanvapi Mosque.

The Allahabad High Court will hear an appeal by the Anjuman Intezamia Masajid Committee challenging the Varanasi District Court order. Hindu side lawyers mention the ongoing hearing and arguments in the High Court and Supreme Court regarding the prayers conducted in the southern cellar of Gyanvapi mosque.
