The bogus email said the person was owed hundreds of pounds.

HMRC shared a red flag to help people identify actions that the tax authority would never do.

Scam messages appear to come from the HMRC and are generally in the form of texts, WhatsApps and emails.

Fraudsters could set their sights on self-assessment customers, with more than 11.5 million submitting a tax return by last months deadline.

People have been urged not to click on any links in the fake message.

HMRC has said more than 400 people have reported the scam within one fortnight.
