Call for nominees to military Hometown Heroes Banner program for Schenectady | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS Shares0 GAZETTE COVERAGE Presented by the Downtown Schenectady Improvement Corp., and city of Schenectady, the program recognizes service members and military veterans, deceased or living. Each banner will honor a Schenectady County service member with a display of his or her name, military branch and photo. Banners may be sponsored by individuals or organizations at a cost of $300. Banners will be displayed on light poles in downtown Schenectady from May through November. Those who are selected will be notified the week of March 29. The State Employees Federal Credit Union has been the major sponsor since the program’s inception.

EDITORIAL: Honor hometown military heroes with a banner | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS This may be the closest any of these local heroes gets to the parade through the streets of their hometown. A banner, hung from the lamp posts throughout the community where they grew up, on display for all to recognize their service and remember their sacrifices. For the seventh year, the Downtown Schenectady Improvement Corporation (DSIC) and city of Schenectady are partnering to honor current enlisted personnel and veterans, both alive and deceased, through the Hometown Heroes Banner Program. Nominations are currently being accepted through Friday, March 26. This is a chance to recognize our military personnel with a prominent place of honor in downtown Schenectady, to be seen by individual community members, visitors, businesses and family members.

Hometown Heroes program honors New York veterans February 05, 2021 A VFW Life member in New York was inspired to start a program honoring local veterans and military members during a trip with his wife in the Catskills Mountains. “We were driving through Cairo (New York) and saw banners with service members on them,” retired Army 1st Sgt. Bill Forte said. “My wife (Doris) and I pulled over to look at them, and I thought it was a good idea to do it in our area.” Life member of VFW Post 1386 in Kingston, New York, and retired Army 1st Sgt. Bill Forte displays Hometown Heroes banners in Kingston in 2019. The program has made more than 600 banners for veterans and military members in the Kingston area.
