Think this can twist and change at a moments notice, and i think so important is getting the gauge and the temperature of these key senators. we are waiting to hear from senator chuck grassley. camped outside of his office. thats where ill go to right after i finish talking with you guys to hear what his next steps are. what is mitch mcconnell saying as the folks return on the hill? that will tell us a lot on the very real potentials that could go forward on thursday and also, of course, his bro...

Describing there is why members have decided not to run for re-election this time. there are a lot of folks in very challenging districts that are seeing the writing on the wall and seeing they have been able to put together coalitions in the past that included suburban, college educated voters, the types of folks that have not been big fans of the trump era. this is talking about the house map, which is i think the scarier of the two big federal pieces for the gop. on the senate side, trump is ...

Challenges. north dakota, montana, west virginia, to name three of them. but its much more complicated when you look at the house map. so many of these competitive house districts right now are in suburbs, in areas where theres not a particularly strong trump base of supporters and hes going -- the republican candidates running there are going to have to appeal to some of these suburban women in particular and other voters who have real qualms with this presidents leadership and frankly are not ...

Referendum on donald trump. like most midterm elections, it boils down -- the intensity boils down to how people are feeling about the commander in chief. we have someone who has deplorable numbers. he goes between 35% and 42%. i think he is around 42% approval right now. its an immigration issue. its more referendum on donald trump. this house map is vastly different than the senate map, because democrats have a much more difficult time because there are more seats we have to defend when you ar...

How did he ultimately come to flip on this? >> theres a lot of questions that still remain. its not clear who told him it could only be done by the courts. we know his wife and daughter had been putting pressure on him. we also know, lets be clear here, house republicans, again, the house. the house map is daunting for republicans to keep control of the house. the one thing this president has been receptive to for a long time is the idea that if democrats take over the house, mr. president, this...

The south america gang that he seems to be fixated on. the culture war is going to be a central issue in the mid-terms especially in the senate states which as josh pointed out earlier were dealing with two maps this fall. theres the house map which is more suburban, its more upscale and more purply and blue and the senate map is very different. its more rural and trumpy and more conservative leaning. trumps message could play okay in some of these senate states. house map is very different stor...

Problem. im going to gin up my base by talking about immigration. >> what other options are there? the president isnt doing an incredible job raising money. im not sure of any house races theyre trying to get into the district where he refused. so then other than, you know, hes actually pretty good at this, at riling up the base and motivating them, whether its going to work or not is another question. outside that, how do you use the president in the midterm year? >> i totally agree, this is th...

Poll at 50%. do they feel the wind at their back now? >> heres the big story. the democratic base is energized, but trump is winning over some of these independent voters that were very much against him early on in his presidency. so youre still seeing a really big field of house races with, but right now the senate, the republicans could pick up a seat in the senate because theyre being fought in states that trump did very well in, and the house map is starting to look less like a wave and mayb...

Now. >> the leader of the democrats in the house, john, nancy pelosi, is adamant, if you see her talk about this at all or what he says behind the scenes to candidates, were not talking about that. that is not what were campaigning on. that is not an issue for us to discuss. let bob mueller finish his job and let the facts fall where they may. and we will see what happens. but you are right, there is a palpable feeling inside the liberal base in the democratic party, especially now in primary se...

Tolerant, negotiating, compromising. it was like he was running in the philly suburbs. >> i think you said this is sort of a post modern meeting. i would say its a post camp david meeting. i think theres no question that republican leaders when they talked to trump laid out the map. the house map, the republicans if they lose 24 seats, they lose their majority and that -- >> theyve lost 18 guys by retirement as of today. >> that is terrifying. and this is something that, you know, the republican...
