Highland Park agreed to settle a lawsuit brought by a couple whose building city officials seized in 2020, then offered to return in exchange for two new police cars, for $300,000.

Earlier this week, the city requested the state look into its finances, but a former mayor of the city is now saying the problem started from decisions made in Lansing.

The Highland Park city council voted unanimously this week to request an outside investigation into the mayor and city attorney’s decision to seize a building in 2020 even though its owners were never charged with a crime.

"It was a shakedown with a badge and a lawyer," said an attorney for the building's owners.

At a press conference, the mayor of Highland Park passed out a stack of documents that contain what he said is evidence of corruption in city government tied to campaign finance violations.
