insurrectionists across the capitol while being called the most violent, racist names. i am jonathan capehart. this is the sunday show. this sunday, after four days and 15 rounds of voting, kevin mccarthy is finally speaker of the house. but, what comes next for the new speaker depends on what he had to give away to win the gavel. it was chaos and drama friday when mccarthy thought he had the vote in the bag on the 14th round, only to be thwarted by congressman matt gaetz, a never kevin who voted present instead of four mccarthy, which is strange, because gaetz had already crowed that mccarthy had already agreed to every concession that gaetz had asked for. i am excited and encouraged, i am grateful that speaker doesn t give mccarthy receptive to each and every change we have demanded. and shawn, without the stage right now where i am running out of stuff to ask for. stuff like allowing one member to call for the removal of the speaker and giving seats on the rules comm
mexico and attempting to enter the united states without going through our legal processes. we responded by using and ensuring there are two safe and lawful ways for someone leaving the country to come to america. that was one of the reasons you were proposing. first, if they are seeking asylum, they can use an app on their phone called cbpone. that s to spell it out. not the number 1. to schedule an appointment at a port of entry and make their asylum claim there without crossing the border unlawfully and have a decision determined by an asylum officer, do they qualify? second, in october we worked with the mexican government to launch a new parole program. there s another program you know it but the public may not. it immediately showed results by reducing the number of people crossing the border unlawfully. the way this parole program works, one must have a lawful sponsor here in the united states who agrees to sponsor you to get here. then that person has to go good
that third ballot, where he failed to get the votes. it s been back to the drawing board for ken mccarthy and his allies. we have seen supporters going into his office. we are told he has been working the phones. he still hoping to negotiate and not planning to drop out. but meanwhile, i spoke to a gop lawmaker. this is some breaking news here. this lawmaker texted me and said this is someone who supported mccarthy. they said they have just gotten a phone call from one of the never kevin republicans, who is trying to grow their opposition and is trying to get that number to flip. essentially what you have here is kevin mccarthy and his office in the capital, trying to get to 218. and you have this opposition digging in and trying to work directly against him. look, this is one of the potential drawbacks of doing the motion to adjourn. there is a lot of concern initially about whether, if they were to send members home, about whether the opposition would have time to grow, whe
congressman jordan said. and then you would agree with. me, why though? speaker pelosi did have that same majority, but you also the trust for caucus. these republicans do not trust kevin mccarthy or his leadership. they have decided that they are going to be around the gate. there is nothing normal or even slightly dust messy about what is going on. this is chaos. in this case is going to endanger the american. people and the reality is, the reason speaker pelosi was able to charge out the majority vote is that she had the trust of her caucus. i don t think mccarthy has that. lifted it any given moment of the course of the next several weeks or months, these are going to show the faces once again, create chaos in the house floor. one of the things we were talking about during the break, one of the big danger points, is when speaker mccarthy is going to cut deals with democrats, to make things work.
to continue running the strategy of getting punched in the tas until they can lockdown the votes. they would love to lock up a longer adjournment to do the behind the scenes work. a semifunctional majority of democrats and mccarthy opponents arerfectly happy to let the would-be speaker keep getting beaten up on national television. maybe for the weekend, but almost certainly not tomorrow. democrats might even make the political point tomorrow on the anniversary of january 6th that some of the other guests were making about election deniers once again holding up the results of an election on january 6th. so there s rhetorical value to keeping this process going. i don t think mccarthy will be lucky enough to get a longer break to finish whipping votes. garrett haake, thank you. thanks to all. while this is going on, the
