State Superintendent Tony Thurmond Visits San Diego County Schools Open for In-Person Learning that Utilize Strong Safety Measures and Social-Emotional Supports
SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond raised his hand and joined elementary students for class today on two campuses in San Diego County that have stayed open for safe, in-person learning by implementing comprehensive safety measures and offering wide-ranging, whole-child supports for students and families.
State Superintendent Thurmond visited Castle Park Elementary and Joseph Casillas Elementary, both located in Chula Vista, an area among the hardest hit by the pandemic. The schools are two out of 49 schools in the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD), which serves nearly 30,000 students, with 68 percent identified as Hispanic and 36 percent as English learners. CVESD is the largest transitional kindergarten through sixth grade school district in California and is approximately five miles from the border of Mexico.
School districts have been making strides in turning the corner during the Covid crisis, but the struggle to return to five-days a week of in-person learning continues.

MARYLAND â As more students head back into the classroom, we're seeing more outbreaks in schools. Since the state began tracking numbers in October of 2020, there have been outbreaks at 216 Maryland schools.
There are three levels of what the state considers an outbreak. There are two cases related to each other, at least three classrooms/cohorts with cases from separate households or at least five percent of the entire school population has confirmed COVID-19 within a 14-day period.
The 43 schools on the list have at least two confirmed cases, that can be either a student or staff member. Even though it's a small portion of people who actually tested positive for the coronavirus, everyone who's in their classroom/cohort has to quarantine for two weeks. So much more of the school is back to virtual learning. The school is removed from the outbreak list on the Maryland Department of Health's website once health officials confirm the 14-day quarantine passed with no new cases or pending results.
MCPS Plans for Full Week, In-Person Learning in the Fall
The upcoming school year for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is expected to look more “normal” for students and staff.
MCPS officials say continued improvements in public health conditions, increased vaccinations, and eased restrictions will allow more students to return to in-person instruction. The school system is planning for a full, in-person five-day week schedule for students in the fall.
“It’s important to stress that all of this is contingent upon improving public health conditions,” said MCPS Communications Department Supervisor Gboyinde Onijala during an interview with MyMCM.
Here’s what MCPS plans to do differently for students and staff during the 2021-22 school year.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Since September, nearly every student at St. Katharine Drexel Academy has been on campus, as the school has held in-person learning five days a week.
Principal Kelly Bonde says it took a major effort to make that happen.
"Every single classroom but one was moved across campus," Bonde explains. "We had to take out all of the furniture in the classrooms and replace it with different furniture to keep every kid six feet apart. So it was quite challenging."

ANN ARBOR – Ann Arbor Public Schools announced on Thursday that it plans to delay the return to school buildings for students in grades 4-12 due to rising COVID cases in Washtenaw County.
This is the second time the district is pushing back its return date for fourth- and fifth-graders, middle and high school students over community spread concerns.
“Since our update last Tuesday, the rapid and significant rise in the level of COVID cases in Washtenaw County continues,” Superintendent Dr. Jeanice Kerr Swift wrote in an email to families. “Current COVID levels are the highest we have witnessed at any time during this pandemic.
Monday was the first day of in-person instruction since the pandemic for some middle and high school students in the Sweetwater Union High School District.
