When analyzing poverty, only looking at unemployment rates will be insufficient and misleading.

There is a disconcerting trend among many countries where economic growth has not effectively translated into poverty reduction, while perpetuating its detrimental effects on the environment. Despite experiencing economic growth post-2020, a third of 160 countries analysed witnessed a surge in extreme poverty.

Are countries becoming more unequal? Can booming economies simultaneously drive growth in average incomes and keep inequality in check? The World Bank has long been publishing a wealth of inequality data through its Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP).

The economic setbacks of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the largest increase in global extreme poverty in decades. Global poverty has now receded to levels closer to those prior to the pandemic, but this means that we have lost three years in the fight against poverty .

The conditions and circumstances of people across the world cannot be boiled down to only national averages. Within the same country, economic development can be unbalanced, with some regions benefiting from growth while others lag.

Global poverty estimates were updated today on the Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP). As explained in more detail in the What’s New document, a total of 63 new surveys were added to the PIP database, bringing the total number of surveys to more than 2,200.
