SPRINGFIELD â Emily Werth says she has seen young people go through "scary and stress-inducing" court hearings so they can get an abortion without having to involve their parents. The minors routinely express relief after the hearings, in which local judges almost always approve requested waivers of Illinois parental notification law for minors seeking abortions, according to Werth, a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois. "Theres just an immense amount of anxi...

In January 1982, the âDoonesburyâ cartoonist placed an incidental character, an Environmental Protection Agency staffer, on the ledge of an office building, promising to jump unless then-EPA head Anne M. Gorsuch (a Reagan appointee) agreed that âthe purpose of the Environmental Protection Agency is to protect the environment.â As Orwellian as things seemed then, they were worse during the Trump administration, when th...

Or perhaps my status as a native hereabouts with some experience in local campaigning. But count me a little less certain than some about the possibility that last weekâs Grand Junction City Council election marks some sort of turning point in local politics. âAll of the far-right candidates see...

In the letter, Seaman asked for a meeting with Jacobsen. "As these allegations have needlessly undermined confidence in the election process, I am hoping to work with you and your office to restore this faith for Montana voters," Seaman wrote. "It would benefit voters across the state for Missoula County to continue to collaborate with your office to provide education on how the policies and procedures currently in law ensure election integrity," he added. With marijuana set to become legal in Virginia as of July 1, Amherst County Board of Supervisors members are backing a referendum for county residents to give input on whether dispensaries that sell the drug should be permitted. The board discussed the matter during an April 6 meeting and directed County Administrator Dean Rodgers to look into pursuing a referendum âthe sooner the better,â according to Supervisor Jimmy Ayers. When asked if the November general election is too soon to ...
