Andru Volinsky: Should N.H. lose its first-in-the nation primary?

In lockstep with extremists in other states, New Hampshire Republicans are responding to the Black Lives Matter movement and racism concerns by proposing bills that prohibit teaching about systemic racism. Implicit bias training, even for police officers, would be verboten. Jim Crow laws, mortgage redlining, the difficulty of building wealth in black communities where homeownership has been compromised would all be stricken from our schoolbooks. The legislation takes the same approach to sexism...

Delays continue in effort to restore King George's Ralph Bunche High School

The Ralph Bunche High School in King George County has two separate storylines—one about its place in history during the national struggle for civil rights and the other about ongoing attempts to restore it. The first—the story that members of the Ralph Bunche Alumni Association have been lobbying for decades to share—speaks to their struggle and perseverance. When Virginia refused to integrate schools, Black families in King George sued for the county to build a separate-but-equ...

Legislature ignores governor's veto threat, asserts power to convene during state emergencies

“I’ll see you in heaven.” It was the last thing Al Braccolino, 90, of Crown Point, told one of his daughters as paramedics loaded him into an ambulance Nov. 16. COVID-19 forced him into the final fight of his life. Ten days later, the chair Al usually occupied at the Thanksgiving table would sit empty. The husband to his wife of 70 years, father of three and grandfather of six died on the holiday. Al’s daughter, Sandra Noe, was herself suffering from COVID-19, which she cont...

However, the question becomes, how does the state decide where to send these vaccines? Which cities get J&J? Which get Pfizer? Which get Moderna? It all comes down to population. The larger populated cities and counties get more of the Pfizer vaccine, because they have the freezer capacities for the shots. The Pfizer shots are ordered in sizes of 1,170...

Within the last week, four people, including a 9-year-old boy, were gunned down at a business complex in Orange, Calif. Eight people, including six women of Asian descent, were killed in three Atlanta-area spas. A week later, 10 people died when a gunman opened fire at a Boulder, Colo., grocery store....

AGEWISE: Hot meal delivery planned again for Meals on Wheels

— LY Answer: Volunteering is a great way to give back and support your community. Senior Services’ Meals-on-Wheels program is an excellent opportunity for volunteers to not only provide a nutritious meal, but also to form friendships, share warm smiles, and provide a safety check for older adults, many of whom are living alone and having trouble preparing meals during the day. Just about one year ago, the Meals-on Wheels program, which prided itself on providing hot lunch-time meals t...
