WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Captain Sophie de Goede scored 17 points as Canada defeated Wales 42-22 in its opening game at the new WXV women's 15s rugby tournament Saturday.

Wales 17-year losing streak to Canada continues despite a gritty performance in Wellington.

Georgia Evans says Wales deserve their place in the top tier of WXV as the competition kicks off in New Zealand this weekend.

Wales and their WXV1 opponents are officially welcomed to Wellington ahead of the opening weekend of action.
