Private campuses get no money under IOE scheme but are promised significant autonomy — that’s only on paper.

According to records and interviews with officials, the readiness reports of the three institutions were approved by the Education ministry's Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) on IOEs by July 2020.

The Rajya Sabha Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, has also recommended that the IoE scheme be "realigned" with the National Education Policy, 2020.

So far, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Madras, IIT-Kharagpur, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Delhi University (DU) and Hyderabad Central University (HCU) have been officially notified as IOEs under the Government category.

However, the EEC has been inactive for the past two years because the last committee, led by former Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami, completed its three-year term on February 20, 2021.
