Iranian authorities have whipped a woman 74 times for "violating public morals" and fined her for not covering her head, the judiciary said.

Iranian lawmakers passed a bill on Wednesday to toughen penalties for women who flout the Islamic dress code, with jail terms of up to 10 years, state media reported. The assembly approved "the 'Support for the Culture of Hijab and Chastity' bill.

Iranian police said on Sunday (April 16) that over 150 businesses were shut down by the authorities in 24 hours throughout the country for not adhering to the obligation for women to wear headscarves, local media outlets reported. Headscarves are part of Iran's strict Islamic dress code, which has also become a matter of controversy.  The closure of businesses came after the implementation of a plan to deal with women who violate the country's strict Islamic dress code.

In a further attempt to rein in the increasing number of women defying Iran's compulsory dress code, authorities are installing cameras in public places and thoroughfares to identify and penalize unveiled women, the police announced on Saturday.

Irans morality police, which is tasked with enforcing the countrys Islamic dress code, is being disbanded, the countrys attorney general said, according to a media report.
