Indiana will soon require districts to use reading curriculums that follow the science of reading. The Lafayette schools have already begun to change how they teach reading.

The Indiana Department of Education says too many third graders who fail IREAD-3 are advancing to fourth grade. The IDOE is working on a new data visualization tool that shows student progress on key literacy skills.

Preschoolers at one Wells County school now have a classroom providing an immersive environment focused on farm life.

Nearly 1 in 5 third-grade students in Indiana failed to demonstrate reading proficiency on this years IREAD-3 exam.

"Data shows a direct link between reading by the end of third grade and future learning," said Katie Jenner, Indiana secretary of education.

Nearly 82 percent of Indianas third graders passed the required reading exam in 2022 -- a tiny improvement for students but below the rate before the pandemic.
