But the barbwire fence, the rifle-toting Texas State Guard troops and, above all, the chatter on private social media groups convinced him to try a different strategy.

"You can come into the country at the port of entry and ask for asylum. Title 42 effectively stopped that, but Title 8 is law of the land," immigration attorney Gabriel Seanez said.

“We know that every single day is going to be a different experience because it's possible that every single day there are different directions given to ICE, Department of Homeland Security and folks crossing the border,” Hallie Brown, the executive director of United Voices for Newcomer Rights.

As the clock nears the expiration of Title 42, the southwest region of the border has seen one of the largest surges of migrants seeking asylum.
