There’s no question that a young Farmington Hills Mercy volleyball squad grew by leaps and bounds throughout the season, helping spur them on a run that’s taken them to the semifinals in Battle Creek for the first time since the 2019 title team. But there’s also no question that they got immeasurably better with one re-addition near the start of the postseason.

If anyone was going to end Birmingham Marian’s reign as Division 1 champion, it makes sense that it would be the Mustangs’ arch-rivals, Farmington Hills Mercy. And end it the Marlins did, sweeping the Mustangs, 25-17, 27-25, 25-21, in Tuesday’s D1 quarterfinal at Dearborn High School, punching their own ticket for Battle Creek for the first time since 2019.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS — There are new names and faces, but the same championship mentality for Bloomfield Hills Marian volleyball in 2023.

This week, the Marian Mustangs avenged the loss to Mercy on its way to winning the CHSL Tournament on Thursday. That was then followed up on Saturday by winning the 2023 Beast Of The East Tournament, a 32-team field including 14 teams that are currently ranked or honorable mention in the MIVCA rankings.

Marian extended its reign as CHSL champion to a fourth straight year with a 25-23, 15-25, 25-17, 25-23 over Toledo St. Ursula in Thursday’s Bishop Division tournament championship match at Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard.

After dropping two matches over the 2021 and 2022 seasons combined, Marian was handed its second loss of 2023’s young season on Tuesday as part of a quad at Bloomfield Hills High School. Marian went 2-1 on the night to move to 6-2 on the season, suffering a 25-17, 25-16 loss to South Lyon East while besting Bloomfield Hills (25-22, 25-18) and Macomb Dakota (25-20, 19-25, 15-7).
