Two Gary men are dead after they were shot outside their homes in separate incidents.

"We believe drugs begets crime," Gary police Chief Derrick Cannon said at a press conference Wednesday. "Drugs present crime opportunities."

Two major drug busts in Gary led to two arrests and one police officer needing to receive a dose of Narcan.

Police said they received a call shortly after 9:30 a.m. that a white SUV was driving recklessly eastbound on Fifth Avenue from Burr Street.

Grant F. Hamady, the long-time owner and broker of a Flint-based real estate company, has died at 84.

The death of Ieisha Jefferson, 31, of Gary, was ruled a homicide by the Lake County Coroners Office.

Three detectives on the Lake County Metro Homicide unit will be reassigned as part of the departments efforts to address staffing shortages, Martinez said Wednesday.

The Lake County prosecutor’s office is charging 56-year-old Anthony E. Thomas with fatally shooting Kevin Lee Johnson, of Gary.

"He was afraid that the suspect would start shooting at him while he was trapped in the police vehicle," according to a court document.

Officers were told the suspect was circling the area in a black Chrysler 200 and multiple shots were fired.
