Canvassing began at 10 a.m. with bipartisan teams sorting and reviewing the ballots until they have completed the day’s batch, which officials expect will be in the early evening.

After eight days of early voting concluded Thursday, unofficial numbers showed 11,462 people had voted early in the primary. That’s 3.8% of Anne Arundel’s eligible 302,714 Democratic and Republican primary voters.

Tom Wieland, a pharmacist, and Cheryl Renshaw, a real estate agent, will face off in the Republican primary. Julie Hummer, a former Anne Arundel County Public Schools Board member, James Estepp, a business expert, Ash Khan, a program manager, and John Dove, a medical device operator, will compete in the Democratic primary. All are hoping to succeed the term-limited Pruski.

One month before the primary election July 19, three Republicans lead the field with the most cash in hand in the race for Anne Arundel County Council seats.

After graduating from the Naval Academy, spending about six years in the Marine Corps and working in the medical field, Gambrills Democrat John Dove Jr. has decided to enter his first political race.

District 4 candidate Julie Hummer said her previous experience on the Board of Education positions her well to take on the Anne Arundel County Council role.
