Maleek Jones left incarceration this week as the state appeals a judge’s decision that he was wrongfully imprisoned for 30 years.

The Connecticut Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights heard testimony in favor of expanding voting rights to currently incarcerated individuals during a multi-hour hearing at the Legislative Office Building Thursday.

A New Haven man remains incarcerated after 31 years despite a federal court ruling that he was wrongfully convicted. Maleek Jones is one of several New Haven men whose convictions in the 1980s and 1990s have been overturned, according to his attorney, Alex Taubes. New Haven police from that era have been criticized for withholding evidence, among other forms of misconduct. U.S. District Judge ...

A judge has vacated the sentence of Maleek Jones, who was convicted of a murder in Connecticut nearly 30 years ago. Jones said, and a judge agreed, his trial lawyer was ineffective and that he did not receive a fair trial.

Jones has consistently maintained he did not commit the 1992 murder that resulted in his 65-year sentence. He has fought the conviction through the courts for three decades.
