Rockville, Md.: Re “Amid guinea pig glut, pols say you can’t sell ‘em” (April 12): By ending the sale of guinea pigs in pet stores, New York City will protect countless animals from extreme suffering. Guinea pigs, like virtually all animals sold in pet stores, come from animal mills where hundreds or even thousands of animals are bred in unsanitary, crowded conditions without adequate veterinary care.

Stamford, Conn.: Gov. Hochul gets it right in opposing the renewed push to repeal qualified immunity (“Gov sez no, they say yes,” Jan. 26). The doctrine of qualified immunity is critically important because it allows certain government officials, including the police, to do their jobs in good faith without being second-guessed through endless litigation and financial exposure.

Brooklyn: I am concerned about Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg taking a different view on crime. Has he not seen any of the latest incidents that have happened on the streets of NYC? Bragg might think that he will bring crime levels down if he gives a lesser penalty or no penalty at all to those who commit low-level crimes. Yet, I have spoken to a lot of store owners, managers and employees who seem to feel differently.
