The unprecedented production statistics recorded in recent days by oil and gas giant, ExxonMobil has not slipped the attention of the Oil and Gas Governance Network (OGGN), an advocacy arm dedicated to better management of Guyana’s petroleum sector.

Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday condemned a recent attack on Kaieteur News’ Senior Journalist, Davina Bagot via a Facebook platform. Speaking at a press conference at Freedom House, the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) General Secretary said the social media post indeed made vile and disparaging statements about Bagot which should not have been said.

The Oil and Gas Governance Network (OGGN) has issued a written appeal to the nation’s 24 women Parliamentarians, urging that they condemn all attacks against journalists here.  

A group of 23 women and two men have issued a letter to the press, calling on government and other aligned actors to cease their vile attacks against activists, journalists, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and human rights defenders who are doing their part to represent the interests of vulnerable groups.

Over the past month verbal attacks, denigrating comments, erroneous accusations, name calling and threats against journalists, NGOs, environmental activists and human rights defenders have mushroomed. Such actions have originated from several sources, including senior members of Government, individuals who appear to be paid or unpaid advisers, social media personalities, columnists and anonymous Facebook page operators. The Guyana Oil and Gas Governance Network (OGGN) and Transparency Institute Guyana Inc. (TIGI) condemn the ad hominem attacks on female journalists, most recently on Davina Bagot and Nazima Raghubir, on social media websites.

Back in 2021, Guyana reportedly gave oil and gas companies US$397 million in tax breaks on profit oil, which is about US$191 million more than the country received in that same year from personal income taxes paid by Guyanese workers.

President Irfaan Ali during an event last month said “hypocrites” is the ideal term to describe those attempting to poison and stop the blooming petroleum sector in the country.

A series of events took place exploring the role the Commonwealth can play at the upcoming COP27 meeting and beyond.
